City of Glass

There had been no rain on the earth for five years. When the thunder struck, everyone went out to cheer the rain. Following lightning, fragments of glass fell from the sky instead of water drops. They fell and lacerated people's faces. Five minutes later, the shattered-glass-rain stopped, and water came, washing the human beings' faces with blood. From then on, all human beings had scar faces.

Except one.

He was too late to greet the rain, he had been sleeping. When he went out, the rain had stopped. All he saw were the dead bodies of birds and dogs, bleeding faces, screams. It was like another nightmare. He woke from one dream to another. And it was the last time he went out in the sun. He didn’t like the way people looked at him, seeing anger or jealousy or fascination. He could feel that they had the desire to lacerate his face with knives.

Walking at midnight became one of his habits after that, because really missed the open air and didn’t want to live under a roof for the rest of his life. A shadow was coming closer, he had never seen any passer by on the path before. It was a girl in black. When he looked at her, he saw the glass splinters in her eyes, and this made his eyes hurt too.

The girl ignored him and walked on. She had a scar face, and from her backless top, he could see scars on her back.

How did the glass get into your eyes?

One day I was looking at the sky and thought it was so bright and blue. Then the rain came.

Why do you go out at midnight?

Because when I touch people, I can see everything inside them. I used to like it. But what I saw always made me sad or disappointed. What about you? Why do you? I don't like the way they look at me. It seems like I am a monster, I just see anger or jealousy or fascination in their eyes. And I can feel that they have the desire to lacerate my face. Tell me what it feels like when the shattered glass falls on you. It was like a dream, and lasted for only a few seconds. It hurts at first, and then you are numb, and then you may forget it. But the scare stays hidden in your mind and when you think of it again, you will be shivering.

I can't imagine.

Come with me, I will show you. She held his hand. As soon as she reached his hand, she was shocked and frozen. Why is that?

I am different, I don't want to be different, but I don't want to be like others. As soon as she touched his hand, she saw a rotten heart.
